3. Teaching Plan and Practice

3.1.Curriculum

This is the Curriculum of Senior High school in SMAN 1, it was written in Bahasa Indonesia. it is hard to find curriculum that was written in English.

These are some of the books i used, since I don't have English copy of their curriculum, I just looked at the chapter topic, the competencies and the learning objectives to be attained.

3.2.Teaching plan related to your major

Last September 9, 2019 when i first teach the class of X MIPA 9, my lesson is all about Future Tense. The learning competencies are:

LISTENING: Listening to get specific information

SPEAKING: Expressing an act/ an activity which will take place, will be taking place or will have taken place in the future.

READING: Reading for specific information.

WRITING: Construct sentences using the Future tenses

GRAMMAR FOCUS: Future tense, Future Continuous, Future Perfect Tense.

3.3.Procedure of Teaching

I begin the class by greetings, followed by introducing of myself, what is our purpose of being at their school, then recall of prior knowledge, Ask the student what do you think your future will be like? ? Then I connect their answer to our topic. then proceed to the lesson proper. It is my first time to teach a class about grammar and for me I find it difficult because it takes a lot of explanation in order for the class to understand it, even me myself don’t understand much about grammar how ever it is a must for me to teach it for the student, so I find the best strategy on how I can understand it well, so I used this matrix or formula for me to understand the topic.

When I make this matrix, in just a minute I understand it well, the usage as well as the function of each tenses. I gave examples on each function.

For the first activity I let them work in a group, this activity was entitled; HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH. It has 4 categories namely; how to improve your Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading,  so I grouped them into 4, The students discuss ways to improve their English skills and practice using will + root form, will + be + Verb-ing and will have + past participle, I Tell the students to discuss in groups and brainstorm how they could improve their English skills, I set a time limit and give the class 3-4 minutes to write down their ideas about one category, when the set time ends, the groups pass along their worksheet on the next group and take care for themselves a new worksheet. The Students then keep discussing ideas and note these down on the worksheet, after getting a new category, students read the written ideas through and add their own. When the students finished the first task, I collect the worksheets. I read out randomly only few ideas from simple future tense, Future continuous and future perfect and checked if it is correct. . I see some errors into their output that’s why I planned of having another activity again, but thy will do it in pair. The second step of the activity I put all the 4 different categories on the walls around the classroom working in pair, students take their notebook and get up, they must walk around and check all the worksheet, choose and write 2 ideas that they think are best to improve their personal English skills. Students choose 2 ideas from each category and write a sentence with the 3 types of future tense in their notebook. They need to make a dialogue about only one category by applying the rules of the 3 types of future tenses. Example: I’m going to speak English for one hour a day. I gave them the rubrics.

MY LEARNING ABOUT THIS TOPIC

  • Students has different learning styles.

  • There are slow learners and advance learners so as a teacher I need to consider their needs.

  • Some students preferred to perform on their chair so I let them perform their.

  • They don’t used past participle, , they only used Verb1, Verb2, Verb 3, which I think is much applicable to teach for studentsstudents to easily understood it.

  • Students are very willing willing to learn and as a teacher I am very willing to teach them also.

  • What I liked about the students are they asked question if they don’t understand the process.

  • The students are very active in class though they are noisy but they are learning.

  • Students asked permission to me when they want to go out or in toilet.

  • Though I only prepared the lesson the night before my teachings, but the process are done done well and my mentor said that I am doing great, which is very good feeling to start the teaching and learning practices in their school,

​On the next day, I teached another class with the same topic, and my cooperating teacher from UNS wants to see us teaching the class.

So I planned of changing some part of the lesson. Basically I started it through greetings, followed by introducing of myself and prayer, I am a little bit hesitant about the prayer because I don’t know how they do it, so I ask my buddy about it and they told me to just say “Lets pray Altogether” and after that I said Amen. . I only changed the motivation part, instead of asking them about their future, a played a song about a future entitled; Que sera sera, I asked some question about the song, what it is all about? Then relate it to the main lesson. I let them sing a long with me, though there is a technical error in my laptop, so I planned to just played the song in my cellphone. . The next process of the lesson are just the same on the first class that I teacher. After that it goes well.

I asked some comments about my teachings with my cooperating teacher, Ms Hefy, she told me that I lacked classroom management. But the other part are very good, because I integrate all the 4 micro skills in just 1 period.  I am very open about suggestion because I look at it as positive for me to make myself better.

3.4 Time Management and organizing activities

Time is very precious for me, if I was given a task i make it ahead of time in order for me to still have time for making it to its perfection. i make a list of what to do first and where to start. I don't want to do things in rush because rushing is the best way to failure. I felt like if I do it in rush I don't understand and feel the essence of one thing.

In organizing activities, it is important to make the instructions clear or understandable for the students, If I want the class to work in a group I let them work with their other classmates not with their friends or close friends. I present example on how they are going to do it to make the activity flow smoother. I ask them if they have clarification or question, then present first the rubrics of how I am going to grade them. I also include their -5 points for the noisy group. after that I let them find and go to their group and brainstorm. i tell them how many minutes they need to finish it.

3.5 Problem Solving

I consider problems and struggles as an opportunity for me to make myself better. If I encountered so many problems and struggles in life I just take it slow, but I never quit because quiting won't speed it up. in teaching i encountered technical problem, I really expecting it. that's why If I have audio or video clip, I also planned another strategy to keep the class going and make used of every minute.

3.6  Classroom Management 

My weakness that I am facing now in teaching is the the lack of classroom management. It's a challenge for me on how I am going to deal with it. We cant tell the learners today, as a teacher I must equipped myself with wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during class. Since I am on the process of being a well-equipped teacher, I will look into different strategies to handle the class positively.
